Psychological Evaluations
Comprehensive assessment. Greater clarity. Thoughtful recommendations.
When symptoms are complex, diagnoses are unclear, treatment has stalled, or important decisions need to be made, a comprehensive psychological evaluation can provide valuable insight into an individual's functioning and needs.
VIP Therapeutic Consulting offers access to comprehensive and targeted psychological evaluation services conducted by an experienced licensed psychologist.
Evaluations are individualized based on the referral question and may integrate clinical interviewing, psychological testing, review of relevant records, collateral information when appropriate, and thoughtful recommendations for treatment and next steps.
When an Evaluation May Be Helpful
A psychological evaluation may be appropriate when:
A diagnosis remains unclear or multiple diagnoses have been considered
Symptoms overlap or the clinical picture is complex
Previous treatment has not resulted in expected progress
Treatment recommendations need additional clarification
There are questions regarding emotional, behavioral, personality, or cognitive functioning
An individual has experienced multiple treatment episodes without sustained improvement
A higher level of care or specialized treatment is being considered
Providers or family members need a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's presentation
Updated assessment is needed to inform treatment planning
A treating professional recommends additional diagnostic assessment
Areas That May Be Evaluated
Depending upon the referral question and scope of the evaluation, assessment may explore:
Emotional and psychological functioning
Diagnostic clarification
Mood and anxiety symptoms
Behavioral functioning
Personality functioning
Attention and executive functioning
Cognitive functioning, when indicated
Trauma-related symptoms
Substance use and co-occurring concerns
Interpersonal and relational functioning
Treatment needs
Strengths and areas of vulnerability
Recommendations for ongoing care
The specific measures and components of an evaluation are determined by the evaluating psychologist based upon the referral question and clinical needs.
Comprehensive Psychological Evaluations
A comprehensive evaluation is designed to develop an integrated understanding of an individual's psychological functioning rather than focusing on a single symptom or diagnosis.
The process may include:
Comprehensive clinical interview
Review of relevant treatment and educational records
Standardized psychological assessment
Personality and emotional functioning measures
Cognitive or other assessment when clinically indicated
Collateral interviews or information when appropriate
Diagnostic formulation
Individualized treatment recommendations
Written psychological evaluation report
Feedback session to review findings and recommendations
The exact components of each evaluation are determined individually.
Targeted Evaluations
Not every referral requires a full psychological battery.
When appropriate, a more focused evaluation may be designed around a specific clinical question.
The evaluating psychologist will determine whether a targeted or comprehensive assessment is appropriate after reviewing the referral question and available information.
Our Evaluation Process
1. Initial Inquiry
Contact VIP to tell us briefly what is prompting the evaluation and what questions you are hoping to answer.
2. Referral Question & Evaluation Planning
The evaluating psychologist reviews the referral concerns and determines the appropriate scope of assessment.
Additional records or information may be requested before testing begins.
3. Clinical Interview
The evaluation typically begins with a comprehensive interview to better understand current concerns, history, previous treatment, functioning, and the questions the evaluation is intended to address.
4. Psychological Testing
The psychologist selects appropriate standardized assessment measures based upon the individual's presentation and referral question.
Testing may occur across one or more appointments depending upon the scope of the evaluation.
5. Integration & Interpretation
Assessment results are interpreted alongside clinical history, records, behavioral observations, collateral information when applicable, and other relevant data.
The goal is not simply to produce test scores, but to develop an integrated understanding of the individual.
6. Written Report
When included within the scope of the evaluation, a comprehensive written report summarizes relevant findings, clinical impressions, and individualized recommendations.
7. Feedback Session
The psychologist reviews the findings and recommendations with the client and/or appropriate family members and provides an opportunity to ask questions.
With appropriate authorization, findings may also be shared or discussed with treating professionals.
More Than a Diagnosis
A useful evaluation should help answer:
What is happening?
Why might it be happening?
What should we do next?
Recommendations may address:
Individual therapy
Treatment modalities
Psychiatric consultation
Medication-management considerations for discussion with the treating prescriber
Level of care
Additional specialized assessment
Family support
Educational considerations
Behavioral interventions
Substance use treatment
Skills or functional supports
Other appropriate services
When additional resources are needed, VIP's consulting and care-navigation services can also assist families in identifying appropriate next steps.
Collaboration With Treating Professionals
Psychological evaluations can be particularly valuable when integrated with existing treatment.
With appropriate authorization, the evaluating psychologist may obtain information from or communicate findings to relevant treating professionals.
This can help ensure that evaluation results translate into practical treatment planning rather than remaining isolated within a report.
For Referring Professionals
Therapists, psychiatrists, physicians, treatment programs, educational professionals, and other providers are welcome to refer individuals for psychological evaluation.
We encourage referring professionals to clearly identify the questions they hope the evaluation will help answer.
With appropriate authorization, collaboration may occur before and/or following the evaluation to support continuity of care and implementation of recommendations.
After the Evaluation
Sometimes the evaluation provides clarity—but implementing the recommendations creates the next challenge.
When appropriate, individuals and families may choose to engage VIP separately for:
Therapeutic Consulting
Educational Consulting
Provider or program matching
Care Coordination
Care Partnership
Urgent Care Navigation
These services can help translate evaluation recommendations into actionable next steps.
Evaluation Fees
Psychological evaluations are priced separately from VIP's hourly consulting services.
The cost of an evaluation depends upon the scope of assessment, referral question, testing required, record review, and other components of the evaluation.
The anticipated scope, fee, payment schedule, and applicable policies are reviewed before the evaluation begins.
Contact VIP for current evaluation availability and fee information.
Request an Evaluation
If you are considering a psychological evaluation for yourself, a family member, or a client, contact VIP to briefly describe what is prompting the referral.
We can help determine the appropriate next step and connect you with the evaluating psychologist.
Important Information
Psychological evaluations are conducted by an appropriately licensed psychologist providing evaluation services through an independent contractor relationship with VIP Therapeutic Consulting.
The scope of each evaluation, assessment measures selected, clinical conclusions, diagnoses when applicable, and recommendations are determined by the evaluating psychologist based upon professional judgment and the information available during the assessment.
VIP Therapeutic Consulting's separate consulting and care-navigation services do not independently constitute psychological testing or evaluation.
